In a momentous and rare move, the Government of Pakistan has elevated Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. This honour, approved by the federal cabinet on May 20, 2025, marks only the second time in Pakistan’s history that this five-star military rank has been bestowed. The first was conferred upon General Ayub Khan in 1959.

Recognition Rooted in Valour: “Marka-i-Haq”

This unprecedented promotion follows General Munir’s commanding leadership during “Marka-i-Haq”, also known as “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos” — a recent military standoff with India. His strategic brilliance and unwavering resolve were critical in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif praised the General’s role as a beacon of bravery, stating that he “thwarted enemy designs and upheld Pakistan’s national honour.”

The Ceremonial Conferment

The formal ceremony was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr on May 22, 2025, where President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif conferred the official Baton of Field Marshal upon General Munir. The President honoured him as a leader whose military career has been “forged with courage and refined by wisdom.”

National Endorsement and Unity

The promotion has received widespread acclaim across Pakistan’s political landscape. From cabinet officials to provincial leaders, congratulations poured in.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah called it “a national honour,” while the federal cabinet also extended Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu’s tenure for his strategic role during the same period.

More Than Symbolic: A Legacy Defined

Although the rank of Field Marshal is primarily ceremonial, it is a rare recognition of extraordinary service, courage, and leadership. General Asim Munir will continue serving as Chief of Army Staff, a position he has held since November 2022.

This milestone reflects not only a career of dedication but also Pakistan’s commitment to honouring excellence within its armed forces.
